In Hadrian’s Wall, Seattle author William Dietrich explores the world of Roman England in the year 368. Filled with love, hate, war, and intrigue, Dietrich’s fascinating novel depicts a restless Rome, eager to wield its power against its perceived opponents in Caledonia (northern England). Separated from Britannia by the 246 year old, 73 mile long Hadrian’s Wall, Roman warriors line the wall, prepared to protect the mother land from harm.

Throughout vicious battles and military strategizing, Dietrich weaves a fascinating tale of betrayal and romance as the high born Marcus Flavius is awarded the coveted post at Hadrian’s Wall and is betrothed to Valeria, a Roman senator’s daughter. Overlooked for the appointment, senior tribune Galba Brassidias plots his revenge and the eventual kidnapping of Valeria by the Celts, betraying his commander and his country as a result.

Taking readers through the Caledonian countryside, Valeria and her servant Savia learn to accept their fate in the lush land of druids and earthly gods. While frightened and cautious, the young bride Valeria comes of age in Caledonia, learning a simpler way of life among the Celts and eventually falling in love with one of her captors. Meanwhile, Savia attempts to protect Valeria, searching for a way to return safely home before the final, violent confrontation.

Hadrian’s Wall is a well-written, intriguing, and passionate novel that will enrapture readers with Dietrich’s masterful storytelling. The writing is impeccable, flowing easily throughout the 362-page novel. Dietrich’s story is full of life and rich with details, multi-faceted characters, and a taste of early Roman history, its wars and aristocracy. From the pages of the prologue through the end of the book, readers will find themselves riveted to this incredible story, savoring each twist and turn.
